You're not doing anything wrong ;)

For power higher than 30W you're going to need to use a lower guage (thicker) wire - such as 24/22G. Because the thicker wire has a lower resistance (it's weird and backwards, I know) you can put more power through it before it heats up :)

For these type of coils you also generally want to use a bigger ID (inner dimension) to ensure that enough juice is in the wick inside the coil in order to keep up with the higher power :)

    Awesome advice @fractious. Thanks.

So with your build with 26g with a 2.5 ID I'd be able to push the power up a bit more or does this only work the 24/22g wire?

Also, last question I promise  What is the ID that the RBA coil comes with?

Good to know that I'm not entirely mucking up. Learning as I go along on this vape journey. I'm diggin it.

Asking questions is the right way to do it - keep 'em coming, sharing what we've learned on this journey is part of the fun ;)

My 26G/2.5ID is generally not well suited to anything above 30W...but that's where I like to vape most of the time so it suits me.

You should be able to squeeze a bit more power out of 26G by building a lower resistance coil...try 3.0 ID and 4 wraps (should be around 0.6 Ohm) - that might work up to about 35W (but you'll need to wick correctly to ensure you don't get dry hits).

Now as you can see you end up with fewer wraps, and it's not ideal (between 6-8 is generally the ideal for me). This is the another reason to use thicker (lower guage) wire - so you can do more wraps at higher IDs while still keeping a low-ish resistance.

Oh and the included RBA coil is 2.5mm ID, 5 wraps @ 0.5 Ohm - so it must be using about 25G (maybe 26G) wire ;)

Nice. I reckon I'm also comfortable around the 30W mark so I'll chill there for a while.

I'll give your build a try for now and get comfortable with it and then I'll try out builds that allow me to push the power a bit.

Expect more questions as I go along :D but for now, thanks for all the info. Has shed some light on this whole wire gauge, wattage and ohm thing.

    @Crackle

Mate remember power is relative to coil. you can get the same temperature you get on a 28g coil using 15 watt on a 20g coil using 25 watt (As an example don't quote my figures).

The higher wattage helps speed up the ramp time on lower resistance coils. think of wattage like this...

If you build a Pee shooter out of a straw you don't need to blow very hard to make the pee fly (low wattage and high resistance from the small tube).

Now if you build a pee shooter out of a gutter pipe. you wont be able to blow hard enough to get the pee to fly. so in this case you add a compressor so you can get more air (More wattage) because the bigger pipe needs more airflow (Less resistant).

If you put the compressor on the straw pee shooter... bad things happen like dry hits...

if you blow on the gutter pee shooter... its going to take a while before you get the pee on the target

    Thanks @arthster

Did mull over the info @fractious provided last night and got the idea of what you so wonderfully analogized there :D

Finally arthur has shed light on a problem I have been having for years
Every time I use public toilets I wondered why my pressure is so low compared to guys around me.
Finally based on the straw peeshooter theory I have now realised that I will need to connect a compressor with a pipe up my butt to generate the same pressure as they do and also be able to write my name whist taking a leak

    Just by the by
You really want to experience gr8 flavour
    Try a coil like this..
    28 g kanthel
    11 wraps
    2.5 mm diameter
    Spaced coil
Comes out at 2 ohms (approx)
    At 18 watts
    It's amazing

What would be better is to just invent a time machine, or find the all alluring fountain of youth ... then you don't need to shove anything up your butt :D

What Arthur failed to mention here is a very important point..
    It's called coil life
    Back to the peeshooter theory.
My coil could blow pee through straw at gr8 distances with no dry hits 20 years ago

But now at 53 it needs a compressor to blow said pee through straw and there is now numerous dry hits and leaks
so lesson here is that with time the coil will need to be replaced

Either that or the mod that the coil is connected to is now old technology and reaching its shelf life

I agree, I use that coil config vertical in my Nauti mini at 15W and it is my ADV.
